So, who really is the top nightclub designer in the world?

The most traveled tunnel in nightclub design

Nightclub & Restaurant Design by Callin Fortis
Designer, nightlife impresario and Bigtime Design founder Callin Fortis , primarily known for designing and branding the international and award-winning brand of Crobar nightclubs - is combining fashion, music, branding and architecture into one package with Bigtime Design.

In addition to his nightclub design projects, Callin’s recent projects include working as the interior architects for Morgan’s Hotel Group’s Mondrian South Beach, a dirty disco re-imagining and build-out of the Cameo Theater (for which Fortis received a nightclub interior design award nomination and won the “Best Nightclub Design Renovation Award”.) and a full scale re-branding of UK dance music institution Gatecrasher. Bigtime has also completed numerous projects in Chicago, including Ristorante Angelina, Exit, Franks, Glow, Hi Tops, Kaboom, Neo, oo-la-la, Tequila Road House, Vinyl, America’s Backyard and Watusi.

The common thread in all of Bigtime’s work is that there is sociology to good design. “People might ask what kind of social or political dislocations my designs represent,” says Fortis. “If you look around any significant design you will find that successful space is interpreted as a social and political monologue, where each user reacts with whatever emotions they already possess”. Bigtime Design is a collaborative studio, consisting of a team drawn of creative artists, architects, designers, and nightlife marketing pros. Fortis and his crew utilize a design ethos where oversized objects create the experience, while the human-sized details evoke a personal connection and create a lasting memory. “I encourage design to react with you, not to you,” says Fortis.

Fascinating combination of art and science.

As part of HSBC’s partnership with the 2008 Wimbledon Championships, JWT commissioned leading British artists Ackroyd & Harvey to produce a unique artwork using the medium of grass.

As grass is at the heart of the Wimbledon experience, this piece captures the unique essence of the most famous lawn Tennis tournament in the world.

The piece that Ackroyd & Harvey have produced is a fascinating combination of art and science, of past and present. By projecting a black and white negative image onto a patch of grass as it grows (in a dark room) they use natural photosensitive properties of the grass to reproduce photographs – thus using grass as a living photographic medium.

From a distance they look like any other monochrome photograph; up close they look like perfectly ordinary grass. Typical exposure time is just over a week, with the image projected for 12 hours a day.

For this work, they photographed three people at Wimbledon prior to the tournament, and displayed the resulting grass versions of the photos on three large panels in Merton Park, where the tennis fans have been camping and then queuing for tickets this year.
Next to the piece you can read about the three people featured who represent the essence of Wimbledon: Tara Moore, competing in the qualifying tournament; Eddie Seaward, head groundsman at Wimbledon for the last 15 years; and Lizzie May, a coach for the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.
